as one of the Google Summer of code projects, Multires is being rewritten, this project has brought many new things to multires including making it a modifier and using the CCGSubsurf (subsurf mod's algo) so weights and such are interpolated properly, the #1 thing about this work is the ability to change the totology of the base mesh and the sculpt and multires will be updated including the armature modifier, so you can have properly rigged multires meshes :) , which is impossible in 2.46
